"Before The Music Dies", or "B4MD" (2006), was made by Andrew Shapter and Joel Rasmussen, two guys who have no connection to the music industry, other than that they have a passion for tunes and wanted to know what's been going on since large corporations, like Clear Channel, have taken over the airwaves, forcing many struggling musicians to handle the marketing and promotion of their own careers.
Opening with a killer clip of Ray Charles and a very young Billy Preston (in full-tilt James Brown mode), the film mixes performance footage and interviews with a wide variety of musicians.
Everyone, from Bonnie Raitt to Erykah Badu to Eric Clapton to Branford Marsalis to Calexico to Doyle Bramhall II to Dave Matthews to...you get the idea...give their take on the business of music and why the internet has become so important to many musicians who have taken matters into their own hands.
Highly recommended viewing.
