"Mythic Journeys" is the featured film in this event sponsored by the Pacifica Graduate Institute. Bainbridge Island is a quick ferry-ride across Puget Sound from Seattle. Ever have one of those days?

Many years ago I was helping out the music prep crew at 20th in writing out the instrumental parts for "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom." It was for the last big chase scene in the mine where Indiana & Co. are fleeing the bad guys in the coal car, flying crazily through the tunnels. The orchestrator wrote six piccolo parts in six-part harmony on ONE staff of the score. The top three notes were in pencil wi… Continue

"History of the Drum" for the film "Ancanar"

Working as composer and consultant, the following was written as back story for the film-in-work, "Ancanar," which has a drum culture integral to the plot. © Stuart Balcomb

PART I

The drum played a mighty role in carrying messages across the Rammoth. Ox hides were stretched over hoops of birch, giving a powerful voice to warnings and communiques meant for distant ears. The collective pulse of the people of Rammoth was echoed in the deep rhythmic language of the taämlin… Continue

Great words to live by

1. Know what you want your life to be about, but also commit yourself to expanding your mind so what you're capable of is so far ahead of anything you would have dreamed.

2. Commit yourself to expansion.

3. Seek out with ferocious curiosity all the skills and tools that will enable you to make your life exactly what you want it to be.

4. Develop within yourself resilience, persistence, and determination to make it happen. Fall down four times and get up five.

5. Have fun along the way.Continue

Dona Nobis

Soundtrack vocalist Lisbeth Scott (Munich, Narnia, Kingdom of Heaven, Shrek) commissioned my son to shoot her new music video Dona Nobis. Using the Red One camera, Sam shot her against a green screen, then "built" the cathedral environment from still photographs he took in Scotland. He added some amazing snow effects and replicated Lisbeth many times to create a "choir."

The above link only provides an excerpt, but I'… Continue

The End of Creativity

They say that all possible melody-note combinations have been used up. Nothing is new anymore. Every motif that any composer writes has already been written — everyone is merely a hack stealing and using old material. The only way to claim ownership anymore is to homestead a melody in the public domain and register it as one’s own. Under copyright law, 75 years after the death of an author, his works are P.D., up for grabs; they can be pilfered by anyone. For years the collected output of Beetho… Continue

Functional Eartraining

I used to arrange for many singers in Hollywood, including a two-year-plus stint with Andy Williams. Not a single one of them would I consider a complete musician, for most did not read music — much less did they have a clue as to what pitch they were singing. If I played the tonic chord and said, "The melody starts on the fifth of the key," they would be clueless. But this is not to say that there wasn't some great talent.

In this article I will address an aspect of musical training that most… Continue

This is random, but I was checking out your bio and wanted to share a quip of mine. My old roommates and I rented "xXx" and were very disappointed in the film as it was over hyped. Halfway threw the film I made a comment of " at least the score is good! " Like I said random :)
