Hi Friends,
Thank you so much for your encouraging and insightful comments about the record.
I was wondering if you might mind if I wrote here occasionally about the back stories behind the songs.
Several of them were writing requests or assignments. My friend Nancy Aronie gave me the chance to take her writing workshop here in Chilmark a few months into the winter after Charlie passed on. What she does in these classes is give you a subject, like "What my father never told me" or "what I did w…

Hi Friends,
What a fantastic journey this has been, getting this collection of songs on record and in hand.
My new album, "Fair Time!" has arrived, and we are now in the middle of folding and packaging and generally hand knitting the little packets of goodness! It was my friend Nick's idea to have the particular packaging that we have, and I've been getting good feedback on it. I would like to know your thoughts on it too.
As some of you may know, I've been back and forth to friend and guitar pl…

I've been invited for several years to be a part of a benefit show that promotes and supports a group called Right-Turn, based in Arlington, MA, which serves artists and musicians and other creative people in their recovery from drug and alcohol abuse. They give folks a place to go, a place to perform informally and a place for community and support. My friend Judy Belushi Pisano, who was married to John Belushi, turned me on to them. I started out and continue to be involved as a memorial to ou…

Hi dear Docu-Tunitarians. Aren't we lucky! There are the best posts on this site! Fabulous! Thank you everyone for sharing the cream of the on-line crop!
I have been having a wondrous time. I was up in NH this past week with Billy Derby working on this new recording we're doing. I can't wait for you to hear it! We are very close to done, and are planning our CD release party on the island for July 23, with a concert at the Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs. You have to see this space. It's octagonal an…

Hi friends, thank you so much for staying in touch. Andrew, thank you for your kind comments, and I am remiss in my postings and I appreciate a little nudge.
So, here is a story about a little nudge.
Soon after my late husband Charlie Witham died, in 2001, our old and dear friend Flower died after a long battle with cancer. She put up a valiant struggle, and, like a lot of folks that we know who have fought these things, she was full of grace till the end. Her husband Steve asked if I would sing…

We're heading off early today to go to Framingham to see daughter Aretha graduate from 9-11 Dispatch Academy. She's been listening to real life tapes of people in dire straits for 6 weeks.
Massachusetts is the only state where the dispatchers at 9-1-1 are trained and allowed to give medical advice over the phone.
May she never have anything more serious than a cat up a tree, may she be a steady voice when someone is going through something tough.
Can any mother be more proud of her daughters tha…

Please forgive me, fellow Docutunaires, this does not have much to do with film, although perhaps it might!
Several months ago it came to my attention that our mother's mother's mother's sister, my great great auntie, had a hit song in the 1890's. Her name was Lottie Collins, and the song was "Ta-Ra-Ra-Boom-De-A"!
There you have it folks, further evidence of the "Ham" gene.
There is what I consider a fantastic story in there about Lottie and her path to the stage. It is a revealing story of the…

So, there were four of us who were traveling together, and we all were wanting to go to the ball. We had two tickets, given to us by our amazing friend Ellen. We needed two more. These ball tickets are not easily gotten, it takes luck and pluck and friends in high places. We decided that we were not going to be denied, and dolled up and headed out on the Metro, to the ball's location, Union Station. By the way, you have not had the ultimate subway experience until you have gone on a Washington D…

Greetings fellow Docutunaires! I am taking this docutunity to thank you all for your comments on the blogs. I could get hooked on this, look out.
I am definitely getting hooked on good news! I have just returned home from the blissful drive to and from DC. There are many moments that I will never forget, and that is saying something for me. Generally I forget a lot of what happens, but I remember where everything is.
You could cut the joy and relief in Washington with a cake server. I was moved…

Hi Guys,
We are in the last hours of the old days, and the world awaits. Today we went to Union Station, where the multitudes are pouring in. There was a sea of people, everyone calm and focused on where they were getting to. We stopped in at Ellen Ratner's Radio Row. That place was buzzing with radio commentators reporting in to stations all over the country. We made our way to the Russell Senate Office Building, where all our senators put their feet up, and picked up our tickets for the Inaugu…

Hi all my Docutunes friends!
We are thrilled beyond measure to be at Ground Zero of the dawn of a new era in America and the world. That is how it feels, and it is especially intense down here in Washington DC. All the phone lines are scrambled, so I can't call you, but I am sure that you are all feeling like I am.
Yesterday we went over to the We Are One concert at the Lincoln Memorial. We were wrapped up in a crowd of Woodstock proportions! The music was being performed many yards from where w…
